Structural Engineer


Position Purpose

To effectively design, construct, and maintain greenhouses and other types of buildings. Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. The Engineer will devise new approaches to problems; prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs; and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes, and accepted engineering practices at Emerald Kingdom Greenhouse, LLC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria
  • Work with supervisor to provide solutions in a timely manner
  • Devise new approaches to problems, and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and TEP standards
  • Perform structural design and analysis calculations using governing codes and standards, engineering formulas, skills, and software. Determine new office hardware, if necessary, and connections to network where applicable
  • Perform layout, detail portions, and calculations for projects using schematic layouts provided by drafters/president
  • Provide drawings for own designs and produce details to incorporate into drawings by designers/ drafters
  • Research design options and document findings for project lead engineer
  • Review shop drawings

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing engineering design tasks and engineering document preparation
  • Interacting with other staff, general public, officials, and contractors
  • Managing projects to meet schedule and budget requirements
  • Occasionally travel to client sites; primarily domestic; primarily day-trips
  • Expert Testimony
  • Types of assignments include determining the condition of existing structures, performing building code compliance and develop structural design/repair recommendations/drawings/specifications. Candidates may perform structural calculations, draft structural drawings, perform construction observation and/or type letters/reports.


Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural engineering.

Preferred: Master’s Degree in Engineering, LEED, experience with steel design.

Special Licenses and Certifications

Professional Engineer (PE) licensing; good design skills with AutoCAD, basic knowledge of BIM/REVIT, proficiency highly desired. Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite; Proficient in computer-assisted engineering design software and equipment to prepare design documents; thorough knowledge of civil/structural design and engineering techniques. Driver’s license with clean DMV report required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The employee is also required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must have the ability to climb a ladder, stair or scaffold and maneuver in and on buildings and other structures. As such, one must be able to respond to both audible and visible alarms. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions that are hot, cold and/or wet. The employee is occasionally exposed to hazardous plants, insects, reptiles, and other animals.

Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm, with an occasional night and/or weekend.
